NSW surged back with 4 series wins up to 1994. It became well & truly the focus of the rugby league world apart from Grand Finals. The Superleague/ARL war caused a split in the game in 94/95. Players had remuneration fever as both sides threw telephone number dollars at all players.

1995 was a remarkable year for Origin. “Could it survive the war?”

Qld appointed Pau Vautin coach and handed him a squad of ‘babes’ who were thought to be easy cannon fodder for a star-studded NSW outfit.

What happened shocked one & all to its core causing an absolute rethink of the world’s perception of rugby league at its top level.

Vautin’s ‘Babes’ secured a 3-0 series win that’s talked about to this day. It had a disquietly healing effect on the rift and so albeit softly quietened some animosity. 

“If a team of nobodies can thrash a team of stars, what are we arguing about? Are our values of some too high or expectations of others too low?” 

Superleague had their Origin series but the ARL series was all anyone wanted to talk about & celebrate.

1996 saw the unification of sorts bring 2 tribes back together and NSW secured a 3-0 series win. Both states came to a level pegging in series wins balancing the concept for the first & only time since inception. Qld rounded out the decade with a series win but NSW clearly dominated. 1999 saw the first drawn series and it was onto the new millennium.
