Origin weathered and survived through Covid, which was the greatest load of horseshit ever invented. We remember the ridiculousness of ‘disinfecting’ the goal post pads and the AFL’s equally stupid, “Don’t handle the football if it comes over the fence!’ Don’t get me started…oh, looks, like I did. Nevertheless, Origin marched on with a keenly fought series win to Qld in 2020 & NSW a very dominant 2021 series scoring 94 points to Qld’s 26 points overall. Qld won Game 3 in 2022, & secured a series win, despite having 3 players knocked out in the first 3 minutes of the game.
Game 1 of the ’24 series was remembered for the 8th minute sendoff of Joseph Sua’lil’i on Reece Walsh rendering a most likely foregone conclusion of the result favouring Qld. A very close nailbiter to NSW in Game 2 of 2024 helped them to a series win after their triumph in Game 3. Qld had their own nailbiter in Game 2 of 2025 as they landed the series chocolates. Under stupid media pressure Laurie Daley landed the 2026 series after a Game 1 which saw Qld cruising to a win until Ponga was sent from the field for a high tackle in the 57th minute with them leading 20-6. Even with a man advantage NSW made heavy weather of catching and surpassing Qld’s total & it took them right up to the 79th minute to do so. Game 2 saw Qld overpower NSW 44-24 but for all the doom & gloom predicted for Game 3, NSW scored a dominant win. Ironically, Ponga was on the receiving end of a high shot with no send off by referee Ashley Klein who was to have a chequered gambling past revealed. More action to follow in the rest of the decade.
