NSW pulled alongside Qld and briefly went ahead in the series wins ledger, but, Qld closed out the decade with ‘4-in-a-row’ that was going to materialise into an astonishing ‘8-in-a-row’ culminating in 11 wins out of the next 12 series. Qld had such dominance the people questioned whether or when can NSW stem the maroon tide.
“Can Origin (once again) survive this test?”
You bet your sweet bippy!
Origin still captured the audience’s appetite regardless and NSW proved its resilience in coming back strongly as it was inevitably expected.
You need 2 to tango and both partners are more than equipped to handle the so-called pressure and are worthy adversaries.
The squads of this period from 2006-2017 were remarkable. They gave rugby league and indeed the wider sporting world something to marvel at. We were in awe of some of the finest athletes ever assembled to play ‘the greatest game of all’.
2 tribes going to war and not asking a single quarter to be given.
Mal Meninga’s coaching during this period was another accolade added to his career and placed him in unique standing in the game and its history.
Some say he was just the ‘bus driver’ but even if you’ve got Winx, you’ve still gotta have someone to steer her the right way.
More to come from the Origin saga in the 10s.
